How much do Filipinas really know about skin care? Is their current regimen enough to prevent skin ageing?
P&G Beauty wanted to go beyond skin-deep to discover the truth behind Filipinas’ skin care. Taylor Nelson Sofres (TNS) recently conducted a survey on 300 Filipina women aged 20-39 years old*. Below are some hard and surprising facts on Filipinas and their perceptions, habits and attitudes towards skin care.
- 52% believe fair skin is a component of the ideal standard for beautiful skin.
- 75% also believe youthful skin is a component of the ideal standard of beautiful skin.
Fair and youthful skin is important to Filipinas. They turn to whitening creams to achieve fairer and more beautiful skin. But are whitening creams enough to achieve youthful looking skin as well?
- Majority of them start to notice at least one of the following conditions on their face: skin dryness, prominent pores, skin dullness, rough texture, uneven skin tone, dark spots or fine lines and wrinkles. Furthermore, they do not know that these conditions are already signs of skin ageing:
- 82% do not know prominent pores is a sign of skin ageing
- 75% do not know uneven skin tone is a sign of skin ageing
- 74% do not know skin dullness is a sign of skin ageing
- 69% do not know rough texture is a sign of skin ageing
- 62% do not know dark spots is a sign of skin ageing
- The top 3 triggers that caused women to perceive their skin had begun ageing includes: 1. Noticing in the mirror / reflective surface that skin looks tired, 2. Comments from other women, 3. Noticing lines and wrinkles in the mirror / reflective surface.
Filipinas start to notice signs of skin ageing as early as their 20s. However, majority of Filipinas do not even know that most of the skin conditions they observe in the mirror are already signs of skin ageing. Unaware their skin is already ageing, they do not start an anti-ageing skin care regimen as early as their 20s to address the problem. Instead, they just stick to using whitening creams well into their 30s.
Inspired by this, market research firm BrandWorks conducted another survey specific to whitening cream users. 160 whitening cream users aged 25-34 years old were asked to look at their skin up close with a magnifying mirror and the results show that:
- More than 90% of whitening cream users still suffers from skin ageing.
- In fact, whitening cream users still noticed signs of skin ageing like fine lines, dry skin, uneven skin tone, rough skin and large pores.
Whitening creams alone are clearly not enough because they fail to address certain signs of skin ageing, especially up close.
Most Filipinas are not aware that while they may appear fair and young from afar, a closer look might reveal that their skin regimen needs to be upgraded – from just whitening cream to an anti-ageing solution that provides both whitening and anti-ageing benefits.
