Oreo to celebrate 100th Year! Brand Kick-Starts Year-Long Birthday Celebration

1912 was a memorable year. Not only because it was when the Titanic sank or when the South Pole was discovered. More than tragic events or monumental feats, this year marked the birth of a brand that would change the way people ate cookies forever. In 1912, 100 years ago to be exact, the delicious Oreo cookies were born. Happy Birthday Oreo!

On March 6, 2012, the world’s favourite cookie, Oreo, will celebrate its 100th year. On this special occasion, Oreo aims to bring to life its wish for Filipinos to “Celebrate the Kid Inside” them.  The easiest way to do this is through the simple ‘twist, lick and dunk’ ritual of savouring an Oreo cookie that has never gotten old even after an entire century!

At 100 years young, OREO is asking the world to put down its cell phones, close its laptops and take a moment to celebrate the kid inside us all. The recently released Global Spirit of Childhood Report[1] revealed that the majority of parents surveyed across 20 countries, believe today’s kids are growing up quicker than did previous generations and should have more time to “just be kids.” The report also showed that parents all around the world long for the carefree fun of their youth.

“In today’s hectic world, people have more responsibilities and pressures than ever before,” said John Ghingo, Senior Director for OREO Global. “Despite this, the simple act of enjoying an OREO cookie and the ritual of twisting, licking, and dunking continues to speak to a universal, human truth: Inside all of us, whether grown-up or still growing, there’s a kid that deserves to be set free every once in a while.”

To celebrate the kid inside everyone and to say thanks to Filipinos and consumers the world over, Oreo will have a year-long celebration. It has already begun, with the brand taking a huge step in refreshing its look in supermarkets nationwide. As a celebrant, Oreo aims to share its delicious eating ritual and special birthday treats for consumers, all year-round!

Oreo wants to reach out to parents and especially dads, to remind them of the pure joy and value of spending heart-warming moments with their kids. So, look out for Oreo’s surprises in supermarkets near you!

In the latter part of this year, OREO will host a multinational event in New York City for selected OREO ambassadors from over a dozen different countries.  Each “AmbassadOREO” will take a pledge to continue the brand’s 100th birthday mission of spreading childlike delight in their communities.

The beginnings of Oreo. Debuting in 1912 in the U.S.A., OREO is now available in more than 100 countries around the world.  From global icons to local favourites, Kraft Foods’ brands like Oreo are memory makers. Everybody loves its smooth vanilla cream sandwiched between two crisp dark chocolate cookies. As proof of its yummy taste though, other Oreo flavours have become favourites in their own right.

Whether it’s green tea ice cream flavor OREO in China, dulce de leche and banana flavor OREO in Argentina, or strawberry flavour OREO right here in the Philippines, this beloved icon celebrates the kid inside all of us like no other biscuit can.

Here in the Philippines, Oreo became part of the Kraft Foods Philippines (KFP) family of delicious brands in 2001 through a merger with the company Nabisco. It is loved by generations as a favourite companion of milk. The delicious ritual of twisting, licking and dunking an Oreo makes it a favourite for bonding moments with the family.

Kids then and now enjoy birthday celebrations because of the fun and laughter they bring. Join Oreo’s 100th year party and celebrate the kid in you! Happy Birthday Oreo!
