Baby Clothes
How many is Too Many?
Shopping for baby
clothes is exciting and most of the time; parents tend to get carried away with
buying too many of one thing and too little of another. Especially for the
first time parents, knowing which is more important and which must have more in
quantity are crucial in baby clothes shopping to keep your pockets intact and
your closets uncluttered.
Janis Stone, a
textiles and clothing extension specialist of Iowa State
University suggests the basic layette that a baby must have, one that is
not too many and not too less.
3
to 6 gowns, kimonos, or one-piece sleepers
4 to 6 undershirts (cotton knit)
3 to 6 receiving blankets (flannelette)
2 to 3 crib sheets
1 to 2 crib blankets (waffle weave, fleece or quilted)
1 sweater and cap
booties or socks
waterproof pads of assorted size
3 to 4 dozen diapers and 3 to 6 pairs of waterproof pants (unless using
disposables)
Stone also adds, “hooded
baby bath towels (two or three) and special washcloths, a sleeping bag or
bunting for outings, and bibs are optional items.” These are quite helpful in
some cases but not really a necessity.
“Even if you plan
to use disposable diapers, some flat cloth diapers are handy to use folded as
protection for your shoulder while burping your baby or for placing under baby
when he or she is not in a bassinet or crib,” she adds.
For a simply
well-designed baby’s basic layette, Hello Dolly Classic White has a variety of
styles and designs that may suit your baby’s needs. Using a high quality fabric
that undergoes intensive quality control and designs from the experts in infant
wear development, Hello Dolly is an ideal companion on the first stages of
their lives.
Crib Essentials
Baby Beddings
Shopping Guide
After
birth, babies spend most of their time in their crib; it becomes their second
home at the early stages of their lives. That is why it is important that their
homes be as comfortable and as secured as possible because the last thing any
parent wants is to see their baby cry and in distress.
When
shopping for baby beddings, there are but three simple things to consider:
comfort, durability and safety, according to the Health Guidance website.
Comfort. Although, it may seem that the softest bedding
is the most comfortable, it’s not. It is better to get a mattress that is soft
but firm enough to support a baby’s developing back. A spring mattress may be
an ideal choice, but it may be a little dangerous for infants since it becomes
too bouncy at times.
Safety. The mattress must be a perfect fit to the crib.
A loosely placed crib may be dangerous for the little one. Also, when it comes
to choosing the quilt, it should not be too thick or too soft as it may
suffocate the baby as it moves around the crib. Make sure that the crib has the
right number of pillows as well, because too much of it may accidentally
smother the baby. Considering the fabric used for the beddings may be wise as
well, make sure it is free from lint, fluff or fur because the baby may be
sensitive to such.
Durability. Aside from the fact that it will be
impractical to buy beddings every other week, it is also a waste of time to
spend more time washing beddings than actually taking care of the baby. Be sure
to get easy-to-wash beddings which can last a long time.
Although,
these three factors are good enough on their own, it is also a reality that
parents need to consider the design and the price of the beddings.
Fab Fabric
Choosing
Fabric for the Baby
Whether it
may be shopping for clothes or beddings, the fabric used remains to be one of
the most important factors to consider. It’s because the comfort and safety of
the baby relies on what fabric is used for their baby beddings and clothes.
According
to Janis Stone, Textiles and Clothing Extension Specialist of the Iowa State
University, “A fabric must have ‘breathability’ so body moisture can evaporate. This
is particularly important in summer months when baby will be uncomfortable and
perhaps develop a rash if perspiration can't evaporate.”
Speaking of “breathability”, cotton is
still the best choice because of its absorbent and breathable characteristics
of its fibers. There are different types of cotton fabric available; some are a
blend of cotton and other type of fibers such as polyester or nylon. These are
okay; just remember that the higher the cotton content, the more breathable and
absorbent the fabric is.
In cases, where the baby needs to wear
something which is polyester or nylon, it is best to use a cotton undergarment
to absorb perspiration. Just make sure to regularly check the undergarment and
change it as needed. However, considering the Philippine climate, it is best to
opt for cottons or cotton blends instead.
